Since 2008, I have been using data to help businesses make data-informed decisions to better manage their environmental risk.
Through my company, Envera Consulting. I’ve used a combination of business acumen, data science, and unconventional thinking to help clients avoid non-compliance. By working with business leaders to identify current and potential environmental issues and analyzing business data to develop, recommend, and implement compliance solutions, I’ve helped companies save money and avoid costly fines. Because of my unique approach in my field, I like to think of myself as the Sherlock Holmes of environmental compliance.
Much of this work has been done using Python, Pandas, SQL and advanced Excel to understand and analyze large client data sets as it relates to environmental compliance and business operations. But even though this work has focused on a very specific, niche industry, much of my learnings would and techniques could be beneficial to most any business.
I have also been fortunate to have participated in panel discussions related to environmental management at USC and Cal State Fullerton and have taught project management classes at UCLA. And on my personal blog, I share data-crunching insights into some of my side projects.
I created Missing Data to be a resource for the intersection of data science and business, as more people start to enter the broad field of data science.
When it comes to data science content on the internet, there are mountains of information about programming and statistics. However, when it comes to the business side of data science — that is, using data to make decisions in a business setting — there isn’t all that much.
My vision with Missing Data is to fill that need and share my experiences with data and business so that current and aspiring data scientists can hone their craft and become more relevant to employers.
I invite you to join me as I share my learnings in this space. But this isn’t a one-sided conversation. I hope that you’ll participate by providing comments and feedback and asking questions. Data science and, particularly, its convergence with business is still a nascent field that promises to be an exciting place to explore. I hope you’ll take the journey with me.
Thanks for stopping by,
Chief Curator, Missing Data
